About
Shrimp are common swimming crustaceans whose curved shapes leave open space when measured in a container.
Shrimp have a bulk density of about 0.38 ounces per cubic inch (0.65 g/mL). Because their curled bodies leave air pockets between them, a cup of whole shrimp is much lighter than a cup of water, which weighs about 8.3 ounces (237 g). Chopping shrimp reduces those empty pockets and increases the amount of weight that fits into the same container. Compared to dense seafood like solid fish fillets, whole shrimp take up significantly more room per ounce.
From Wikipedia
A shrimp is a common name typically used for crustaceans with an elongated body and a primarily swimming mode of locomotion. The name usually refers to decapods belonging to the Caridea or Dendrobranchiata, although some crustaceans outside this order are also referred to as "shrimp".
