About
Ground beef is minced cattle meat that packs closely together, weighing almost exactly as much as water by volume.
With a typical bulk density of roughly 8.3 pounds per gallon (1 gram per milliliter), raw ground beef has nearly the same density as liquid water. The grinding process breaks the muscle into small pieces that pack tightly together with very few trapped air pockets. A standard one-pound (454-gram) package takes up just under two US cups (454 milliliters) of space. This makes it much denser than loose shredded meats or dry pantry staples like rice.
