About
Pine nuts are small, edible pine tree seeds that weigh about 4.8 ounces (137 grams) per level cup.
Pine nuts have a bulk density of about 36 pounds per cubic foot (0.58 grams per milliliter), which means they easily float in water. Because of their small, rounded shape, they settle more densely than rolled oats but remain lighter than fine granulated sugar. Out of dozens of pine species with edible kernels, only about twenty produce seeds large enough to harvest for food.
From Wikipedia
Pine nuts, also called piñón, pinoli, or pignoli, are the edible seeds of pines. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, only 29 species provide edible nuts, while 20 are traded locally or internationally owing to their seed size being large enough to be worth harvesting; in other pines, the seeds are also edible but are too small to be of notable value as human food.
