About
Ground turmeric is a bright yellow spice made from dried rhizomes, weighing about half as much as water by volume.
Ground turmeric has a loose bulk density of about 4.2 ounces per US cup (0.5 g/mL). A single US tablespoon weighs around 0.26 ounces (7.4 g), meaning a standard spice jar holds only a few ounces. It settles into jars similarly to other fine culinary powders like ground ginger and cinnamon. Because ground spices trap air between particles, turmeric occupies about twice the physical space of liquid water of equal weight.
