A kind of spice · also called vanilla beans, vanilla pod, vanilla pods
About
The cured seed pod of a tropical orchid fills a standard cup at just 3.3 ounces (95 g).
Vanilla beans have a typical bulk density of 0.4 g/mL, so a full US cup weighs approximately 3.3 ounces (95 g). Because the long, slender orchid pods do not settle tightly, they leave empty space and take up more volume than powdered spices. As a result, a cup of whole beans weighs less than half as much as an equal measure of granulated sugar.
From Wikipedia
Vanilla is a spice derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily obtained from the seed pods of the flat-leaved Mexican and Central American vanilla (V. planifolia).
