A kind of chili pepper · also called red pepper flakes, chili flakes, crushed red pepper flakes
About
Crushed red pepper is a light, flaky spice made from dried chilies that takes up substantial space for its weight.
At roughly 2.9 ounces per cup (0.35 grams per milliliter), crushed red pepper is relatively airy because the flat flakes and loose seeds leave large air pockets between them. A standard pint container holds only about 5.9 ounces (166 grams) of the flakes. In comparison, finely ground spices like table salt or ground black pepper settle much more closely and take up far less volume for the same mass.
