About
Brown rice is an unpolished whole grain that packs roughly 6.7 ounces (189 grams) into a single measuring cup.
Uncooked brown rice has a bulk density of about 50 pounds per cubic foot (0.8 grams per milliliter). Because it keeps its outer bran and germ layers intact, it packs at roughly the same density as white rice and dry lentils. A standard 1-pound (454-gram) bag fills about 2.4 US cups (568 milliliters) of container space. Once cooked, the grains absorb water and expand to roughly triple their dry volume.
From Wikipedia
Brown rice is a whole grain rice with only the inedible outer hull removed. This kind of rice sheds its outer hull or husk but the bran and germ layer remain on, constituting the brown or tan colour of rice.
