About
Wood chips are shredded pieces of timber that pile loosely, making them much lighter than solid wood.
With a typical bulk density of about 19 pounds per cubic foot (0.3 g/mL), wood chips take up substantial space relative to their weight. Their irregular shapes create pockets of trapped air throughout a pile, preventing them from settling tightly together. Because of these air gaps, a bucket of wood chips is far lighter than the same bucket filled with garden soil or gravel.
From Wikipedia
Woodchips are small- to medium-sized pieces of wood formed by cutting or chipping larger pieces of wood such as trees, branches, logging residues, stumps, roots, and wood waste.
