About
Peat moss is an exceptionally light soil conditioner that takes up substantial space while weighing very little.
Dry peat moss has a bulk density of roughly 12.5 pounds per cubic foot (0.2 grams per milliliter). Because it is so airy, a standard bag takes up a lot of physical volume while remaining easy to lift. The material comes from decayed bog moss species with hollow cells that trap air when dry. This makes dry peat moss far lighter than potting soil or sand, though it can absorb up to 26 times its dry weight in water.
From Wikipedia
Sphagnum is a genus of approximately 380 species of mosses, commonly known as sphagnum moss, also bog moss and quacker moss. Accumulations of Sphagnum can store water, since both living and dead plants can hold large quantities of water inside their cells; plants may hold 16 to 26 times as much water as their dry weight, depending on the species.

Quick answer
One US cup of dry peat moss weighs about 1.7 ounces (47 grams). That is roughly one-fifth the weight of an equal volume of water, making it feel very light in your hand.
