About
Topsoil is the nutrient-rich outermost ground layer, packing about 10.0 ounces (284 grams) into a standard measuring cup.
With an average bulk density of about 75 pounds per cubic foot (1.2 grams per milliliter), dry topsoil is denser than pure peat moss or bagged potting mix. A standard five-gallon bucket holds roughly 50 pounds (23 kilograms) of dry material. It weighs less than pure sand or gravel because plant matter and root channels create porous air pockets. When rain soaks into the ground, absorbed moisture can significantly increase its total weight.
