About
Split peas are dried, husked field peas that pack tightly, weighing about 7.1 ounces (201 g) per cup.
Split peas are the dried, peeled seeds of the pea plant (Pisum sativum) split in half. Their flat surfaces allow them to pack closely together, giving them a bulk density of about 53 pounds per cubic foot (0.85 g/mL). Because they leave fewer empty air gaps, they sit heavier in a measuring cup than larger, round legumes like chickpeas. A standard 1-pound (454 g) bag fills roughly 2 and a quarter US cups (534 mL) of pantry space.
