About
The polar bear is the largest living bear and land carnivore on Earth.
Polar bears rival brown bears as the largest land carnivores alive today. Adult males are significantly bigger than females, with the largest individuals weighing up to 1,760 pounds (800 kg). Beneath their pale fur, they carry a layer of fat up to 4 inches (10 cm) thick that adds bulk and retains body heat. Their paws can measure nearly a foot wide, acting like snowshoes to distribute their heavy body mass over sea ice.
