About
The American black bear is the smallest and most common bear species living across North America.
While it is the smallest bear in North America, it is still significantly larger than any wild cat or canine on the continent. Adult males are generally much larger than females and can sometimes reach over 500 pounds (227 kg). A bear's weight also fluctuates dramatically across the seasons, often increasing by double-digit percentages during the fall to prepare for winter hibernation.
