A kind of axe · also called Hand axe
About
A hatchet is a compact, one-handed axe about 14 inches long designed for chopping and splitting small wood.
Unlike full-sized felling axes that require two hands and measure up to 36 inches (0.9 m) long, a hatchet is built specifically for one-handed use. Hatchets typically range between 1 and 2.5 pounds (0.5 to 1.1 kg), making them light enough to carry on a belt. Most of the tool's mass is concentrated in the forged head, giving it enough striking force to cut firewood despite its small footprint.
From Wikipedia
A hatchet is a single-handed striking tool with a sharp blade on one side used to cut and split wood, and a hammerhead on the other side. Hatchets may also be used for hewing when making flattened surfaces on logs; when the hatchet head is optimized for this purpose it is called a hewing hatchet.
