About
A beehive is a knee-high wooden box built to house tens of thousands of working honeybees.
Standard wooden hives are modular boxes that beekeepers can stack higher as a honeybee colony expands during the season. While an empty box is relatively light, the total weight climbs rapidly as bees pack the internal frames with wax, brood, and dense honey. Wild nests inside hollow tree cavities can spread across several vertical feet, but artificial hives keep the colony inside an orderly, manageable footprint. Depending on how many honey storage boxes are stacked on top, a hive can double or triple in height by late summer.
From Wikipedia
A beehive is an enclosed structure in which honey bees raise their young and produce honey as part of their seasonal cycle. Although the word beehive is used to describe the nest of any bee colony, scientific and professional literature distinguishes nest from hive.
