About
The western barn owl is a medium-sized bird of prey that stands about 14 inches tall despite its remarkably light frame.
Barn owls often look larger than their true mass because of their broad wings and thick, fluffy feathers. Females are generally slightly heavier and larger than males. Compared to heavier raptors like the great horned owl, barn owls have slender bodies built for buoyant, silent hunting. Their lightweight skeleton keeps their body mass down to about the weight of a loaf of bread.
From Wikipedia
The western barn owl is a species of barn owl native to Europe, southwestern Asia, and Africa. It was formerly considered a subspecies group together with barn owls native to other parts of the world, but this classification was found to be paraphyletic with respect to some other members of the genus.
