About
Packed brown sugar is moist sucrose pressed firmly into a measuring cup, weighing about 7.8 ounces (220 grams).
Packed brown sugar has a typical bulk density of about 58 pounds per cubic foot (0.93 grams per milliliter). Because molasses coats the sugar crystals with moisture, the grains stick together easily and compress to push out air pockets. This makes it significantly denser than regular granulated white sugar, which weighs closer to 7 ounces (200 grams) per cup. A standard two-pound (907-gram) box or bag yields slightly over four packed cups.
From Wikipedia
Brown sugar is a sucrose sugar product with a distinctive brown color due to the presence of molasses. It is either an unrefined or partially refined soft sugar consisting of sugar crystals with some residual molasses content, or produced by the addition of molasses to refined white sugar.
