About
The Kodiak bear is an Alaskan brown bear subspecies that ranks among the largest living bears on Earth.
Native to islands in southwest Alaska, this brown bear subspecies rivals the polar bear for the title of the largest living bear. Adult males are significantly bigger than females, often weighing up to twice as much. Their body mass also changes dramatically by season, as bears can pack on hundreds of pounds of fat while feeding on salmon in late summer and fall.
