About
Gravel is a loose mix of small rock fragments that packs considerable weight into a modest volume.
With a typical bulk density of about 106 pounds per cubic foot (1.7 g/mL), gravel is much heavier than loose topsoil or dry wood chips. The air gaps between the rock pieces reduce its weight compared to solid stone, but it still packs tightly. A standard five-gallon bucket filled with gravel weighs roughly 71 pounds (32 kg).
From Wikipedia
Gravel is a loose aggregation of rock fragments. Gravel occurs naturally on Earth as a result of sedimentary and erosive geological processes; it is also produced in large quantities commercially as crushed stone.
