About
Decomposed granite is naturally weathered rock broken into fine gravel, packing substantial weight into small landscaping volumes.
With a bulk density of about 103 pounds per cubic foot (1.65 grams per milliliter), it is far heavier than organic mulch or loose topsoil. A standard 5-gallon bucket holds roughly 69 pounds (31 kilograms) of the compacted gritty rock. A full cubic yard weighs around 2,780 pounds (1.26 metric tons), which quickly fills truck weight limits before filling the bed space.
From Wikipedia
Decomposed granite is granite rock that has weathered to the point where it readily fractures into smaller pieces of weaker rock. Further weathering yields material that easily crumbles into gravel-sized particles known as "grus", which may then break down further to produce a mixture of clay and silica sand or silt particles.
