About
An elk calf is a young deer that quickly grows to the weight of a large domestic dog.
Calves start life weighing only about 30 to 35 pounds (14 to 16 kg) at birth before rapidly putting on weight during their first summer. Although they look small next to a 700-pound (318 kg) adult cow elk, calves grow fast enough to run with the herd within weeks. Male and female calves are similar in size early on, but young males will eventually grow much larger. At this stage, a standing calf reaches just below waist height on an average adult human.
From Wikipedia
The elk or wapiti is the second largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in its native range of North America and Central and East Asia. The word "elk" originally referred to the European variety of the moose, Alces alces, but was transferred to Cervus canadensis by North American colonists.
