About
The blue whale is an ocean-dwelling baleen whale and the largest animal known to have ever lived.
It is the largest member of the rorqual family, outgrowing other baleen species like the fin whale. Females are usually slightly larger than males, and the largest recorded individuals have reached nearly 100 feet (30.5 m) and 400,000 pounds (180,000 kg). Scientists recognize four distinct subspecies distributed across different ocean basins, which show minor differences in average adult length. Even isolated body parts are enormous, with the heart alone weighing around 400 pounds (180 kg).
