About
The West Indian manatee is a massive aquatic herbivore that grazes on seagrass in warm coastal waters.
This species is the largest living sirenian, easily outweighing dugongs and other manatee species. Females typically grow slightly larger than males, with rare individuals reaching lengths over 13 feet (4 m) and weights exceeding 3,000 pounds (1,360 kg). Despite their rounded, bulky appearance, manatees have very little blubber, which forces them to remain in warm water to survive.
