About
The southern cassowary is a heavy, flightless rainforest bird that stands over five feet tall.
It is the second heaviest living bird, outweighed only by the common ostrich. Female southern cassowaries are noticeably larger and heavier than the males. Powerful legs carry their bulky frames, ending in large feet with sharp inner claws that can reach 4 inches (10 cm) in length.
