About
The North American river otter is a sleek, semiaquatic mammal stretching over three feet long.
Across their range, adults generally weigh between 11 and 31 pounds (5 to 14 kg), with males growing slightly larger than females. They are far smaller and lighter than sea otters, but much larger than close relatives like minks. A significant portion of their length comes from their thick, tapered tail, which can make up over a third of their total body length. Despite measuring over three feet from nose to tail, their short legs keep their backs under 9 inches off the ground.
