About
The North American raccoon is a stocky, masked mammal about the size of a small dog.
It is the largest member of the procyonid family, outgrowing relatives like coatis and ringtails. Adult raccoons vary widely across their range, spanning from 11 to 57 pounds (5 to 26 kg), with males usually larger than females. In colder regions, a raccoon can nearly double its weight by autumn as it builds up a thick layer of fat for the winter.
