About
The North American porcupine is a stocky, quill-covered mammal and the second-largest rodent on the continent.
In North America, only the beaver grows larger among native rodents. Adult males are generally larger than females, and their weight can shift across the seasons as they build fat for the winter. A dense coat of fur and thousands of sharp quills adds extra visual bulk, making the animal appear wider than its skeleton suggests.
