About
The Mexican redknee tarantula is a colorful, ground-dwelling spider with a span that stretches across an adult human hand.
This common name refers to two closely related Mexican spider species, Brachypelma hamorii and Brachypelma smithi. Females are noticeably bulkier and heavier than males, though mature males often have slightly longer legs relative to their body size. While large compared to standard house spiders, this species is medium-sized among tarantulas, reaching about half the length of giant species like the Goliath birdeater. Despite spreading out wide enough to cover a small plate, the spider weighs only as much as a single large chicken egg.
