About
The European hedgehog is a small, spiky mammal roughly the size and weight of a standard loaf of bread.
It is the largest hedgehog species in Europe, growing significantly bigger than the African pygmy hedgehogs commonly kept as pets. Males and females are similar in build, but individual weights shift dramatically as they pack on fat before winter hibernation. When curled up in defense, the animal forms a compact, spiny sphere slightly larger than a softball.
