About
The European eel is a critically endangered, snake-like fish that can grow over three feet long.
European eels begin life as paper-thin larvae only a fraction of an inch long before swelling into long, muscular adults. Females grow much larger than males, which rarely exceed 1.5 feet (0.45 m) in length. They are similar in shape and size to American eels, though adult European eels often reach slightly heavier weights. The dramatic physical change between their tiny transparent juvenile stage and adult form originally led researchers to mistake them for different species.
