About
The common hippopotamus is a massive semiaquatic African mammal that weighs as much as a car.
This species dwarfs its only living relative, the pygmy hippo, which weighs only a small fraction as much. Males generally grow larger than females and can continue gaining mass throughout their lives, sometimes reaching well over 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg). Despite their short legs and barrel-shaped torsos, their heavy bones allow them to sink and walk comfortably along the bottoms of rivers and lakes.
