About
The California ground squirrel is a common western rodent measuring roughly 18 inches long from nose to tail.
A large portion of its total length comes from its bushy tail, which accounts for nearly half of its length. Males are generally slightly heavier and longer than females, though both sexes gain significant weight before winter. Compared to tree squirrels of similar length, this species has a stockier, heavier build adapted for living in underground burrows.
