About
The American bison is the heaviest land mammal in North America, known for its tall shoulder hump and massive head.
Males are much larger than females, which usually weigh around 1,000 pounds (450 kg). It is one of only two surviving bison species, typically weighing more than the taller European bison. A prominent hump of muscle on its back supports the heavy skull and lets the animal swing its head to clear snow while grazing in winter.
