About
The American alligator is a large freshwater reptile native to the southeastern United States that stretches over eleven feet long.
This reptile is significantly larger than the Chinese alligator, which is its only other living genus relative and rarely exceeds 5 feet (1.5 m). Male alligators grow noticeably larger and heavier than females, with rare individuals reaching lengths over 13 feet (4 m). Despite their low-slung bodies close to the ground, their thick, muscular tails make up nearly half of their total length.
