About
Body fat is energy-storing tissue that takes up about ten percent more space than an equal weight of water.
Body fat has a typical density of 7.5 ounces per cup (0.9 g/mL), which means it is less dense than water and floats. Because lean muscle has a higher density of roughly 8.8 ounces per cup (1.06 g/mL), a pound of fat occupies about eighteen percent more space than a pound of muscle. This lower density allows adipose tissue to cushion and insulate the body efficiently without adding excess weight.
From Wikipedia
Adipose tissue is a loose connective tissue composed mostly of adipocytes. It also contains the stromal vascular fraction of cells including preadipocytes, fibroblasts, vascular endothelial cells and a variety of immune cells such as adipose tissue macrophages.
